When Christopher Columbus first laid eyes on Jamaica in 1494, he found it was already inhabited by over 200 villages that were ruled by chiefs. Soon after his arrival, the inhabitants introduced him to the the lignum vitae; a species of flower that had powerful medicinal properties. The lignum vitae became Jamaica’s national flower.
